Fact #methane #arctic #carbonbudget #permafrost

Scientists estimate that totally 1.3 trillion tons of #methane are stored beneath #arctic ground, 250 times of the total methane in earth's atmosphere today.

Rising earth temperature is causing vast #permafrost in arctic region to melt, and that is causing methane underneath it to be released to earth's atmosphere. The problem nowadays is that #CarbonBudget of estimated 460 gigatons of carbon to reach goal of earth temperature rising less than 1.5 Celsius degree according to 2015 International Paris Agreement did not take into account methane released by melting arctic permafrost, and we do not know how much methane is and will be released by melting permafrost.
